OAKMONT, Pa. – Daniel Summerhays’ best round this season on the PGA Tour is a 65. On Friday he matched that . . . at Oakmont.
The 32-year-old followed his first-round 74 in the morning with a best-of-the-week 65 to move into contention at the weather-delayed U.S. Open.
Summerhays got his round going with a lengthy birdie at the par-3 eighth hole and added another long birdie from the back fringe at the 14th hole before closing his day with a clutch par save at No. 18.
“They gave us 45 minutes between our rounds so I could kind of hit the reset button,” said Summerhays, who is tied for seventh place and three strokes off the lead.
