Strong winds blow British Open off course toward Monday finish

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – We’re heading for a Monday finish for only the second time in British Open history. Not since 1988 has the R&A failed to conclude the British Open on a Sunday.

Seve Ballesteros is the only player to be crowned Open champion on a Monday. He won the 1988 Open in a Monday finish at Royal Lytham & St. Annes after torrential rain played havoc with scheduling.

Here at the Home of Golf on Saturday, with wind speeds gusting to 40 mph and players unable to complete their second rounds, the R&A had no choice but to go to a Monday finish.
