Stomach ailment forces McIlroy to adjust at HSBC Champions

SHANGHAI — Rory McIlroy’s preparation for the WGC-HSBC Champions will be a little different this week.

After arriving from Turkey, where he tied for sixth at the Turkish Airlines Open, McIlroy ate some questionable room service here.

“I had a piece of toast and a couple of bits of melon,” McIlroy said Wednesday at Sheshan International Golf Club, site of this week’s WGC-HSBC Champions. “I came out thinking, I’ll try and hit a few balls, but even just making a couple of swings, stomach just too sore to try to even hit another shot.”

After having taken antibiotics plus Buscopan for the abdominal pain and additional painkillers, McIlroy still didn’t feel well.
