GURNEE, Ill. – The Merit Club served up plenty of highlights on Day 1 of the UL International Crown. The 468-yard par-5 eighth hole, for example, gave up five eagles.
In the opening match, Australia’s Karrie Webb and Teresa Lu of Taiwan halved the hole with eagles. Lu hit an 8-iron for her second shot, as did her teammate, Yani Tseng.
The variety of holes and shots at the Merit Club makes for interesting theater.
“The next hole is a par 3, like 220 (yards) to the pin,” said Tseng of No. 9. “So you’re hitting 14 clubs out of the bag for match play.
