Jordan Spieth teed the ball up at Plainfield Country Club's 10th hole Thursday morning, ready to start an official round for the first time as the World No. 1.
But after going strong for nine holes, the 22-year-old out of Dallas, Texas, did not look worthy of that ranking.
Spieth played the front nine in 6-over 40, capping an opening round of 4-over 74 at The Barclays in Edison, N.J., his worst round since May.
"All in all, I'm just going to take today as a fluke round," said Spieth.
