TURNBERRY, Scotland –– Three years ago, Melissa Reid awoke at 4 a.m. in Germany and groggily looked at her phone. She had a missed call from her dad.
“I never wake up in the night,” Reid said. And a missed call from her father was unusual because he had been with her mother, Joy, and she was the one who always called. Perhaps it was an accidental call, Reid thought.
She listened to the voicemail. Nothing but beeping noises.
Suddenly, panic struck.
