Nigel Edwards will not captain a fourth Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team, as the R&A announced Wednesday that Scotland’s Craig Watson will lead the squad in 2017.
Watson has big shoes to fill after Edwards won two of his three team matches and was lauded for his strong leadership skills. Last fall, at Royal Lytham, Team GB&I routed the Americans by seven points, the most lopsided defeat in the history of the biennial matches.
Watson, 49, won the 1997 British Amateur and appeared on his lone Walker Cup team that year.
“Playing on the Walker Cup team is one of my proudest moments in golf,” he said.
