VERO BEACH, Fla. – Minnesota’s Sammy Schmitz, a three-time Minnesota player of the year, will take a 2-up lead over Florida’s Marc Dull into the final scheduled 18 holes Thursday at the 35th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at John’s Island Club’s West Course. The second 18 of the 36-hole final is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
Schmitz got off to what he called a “choppy start,” slipping 2 down after two holes, but then settled down and played steadily over his next 16 holes. Schmitz, a 35-year-old regional director for a healthcare-services company, quickly leveled the match with birdies at the fourth and fifth holes (2 feet and 4 feet, respectively).
