Rose, McDowell get off to strong start at UBS Hong Kong Open

Justin Rose went bogey free to open the European Tour's UBS Hong Kong Open, carding a 5-under 65 to get within one shot of first-round leaders Wei-chih Lu and Andrea Pavan.

Rose, who birdied three of his first five holes after starting at No. 10, missed only one fairway and two greens in regulation on the day at Hong Kong Golf Club. He's tied for third with former Washington standout Cheng-Tsung Pan and Jeev Milkha Singh.

Graeme McDowell is two shots off the early lead after shooting a 66 Thursday. He's among a group of six tied at that mark and one shot ahead of a group that includes Ian Poulter – who entered the tournament under well-documented circumstances – Anirban Lahiri and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
