Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will not compete for Ireland at the summer's 2016 Rio Olympics because of the threat of the Zika virus.

The Olympic Council of Ireland said it was "extremely disappointed" at McIlroy's decision to withdraw but understands the golfer's reasoning behind his decision, per the Irish Independent'sCormac Byrne.
