Rory McIlroy saves $20,000 in fines by apologizing for club throw

Saying "I'm sorry" saved $20,000 for Rory McIlroy in 2015, apparently.

The 26-year-old told the Guardian on Monday that a three-iron club toss into a lake during the second round of the 2015 WGC-Cadillac Championship originally earned McIlroy a $25,000 fine from the PGA Tour.

That is until the Northern Irishman apologized for the incident at Doral in a post-round television interview.

“The fine was reduced from $25,000 to $5,000 because I said I was sorry on the TV interview afterwards," McIlroy told the Guardian.

Here is the club throw in question:

Donald Trump, the main architect of course changes to Doral's Blue Monster, had a diver retrieve the three-iron from the lake the next day and returned the stick to McIlroy on the driving range.
