Jay Monahan on Wednesday was, in a word, resolute.
During a hastily assembled news conference from TPC River Highlands, site of this week’s Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour commissioner was unwavering in his belief that they should play on through this coronavirus pandemic. That they should play on despite more positive tests. That they should play on with these stricter health protocols and under the threat of disciplinary action for those who defy the safety guidelines.
“I think the reality is that we all have to learn to live in an environment of COVID-19,” Monahan said. “I’m concerned, but I’m also confident in the program and protocols we’ve put in place and our ability to be able to sustain the PGA Tour and give our players opportunities on both of these tours over the courses of the year, so long as we continue to be as diligent as we intend to be.
