Phil Mickelson’s last-minute decision to skip the WGC-Match Play Championship for a fourth straight year means that Finland’s Mikko Ilonen will be in the field for a second time.
Mickelson reportedly let the PGA Tour know of his decision, citing “personal reasons,” according to a report on golfchannel.com. A source confirmed to Golfweek that Mickelson would not play. He also skipped each of the last three years when the tournament was held in mid-February, though each time he said it was because of his children’s school vacations.
The Match Play Championship will be begin Wednesday at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, after having been played at Dove Mountain Marana, Ariz.
