ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Phil Mickelson isn’t the favorite this week at St. Andrews and at 30-1 odds, the five-time major champion isn’t even on too many radar screens. That’s just the way Mickelson, who won the British Open in 2013, likes it.
At 45, Mickelson has clearly crossed the halfway point of his hall-of-fame career. His game has more fits and starts than he would probably care to admit, and despite being a former champion, he wasn’t tapped to come in for a pre-tournament interview.
Mickelson made his annual pilgrimage to the Scottish Open at Gullane last week, where his goals were simple: get his ballstriking in order, warm up a cold putter and get into contention.
