A few years ago it was common to hear the PGA Tour’s fall schedule referred to as the “Silly Season,” with its weak fields, odd formats and occasional celebrity sightings.
These days, with changes in the Tour’s calendar, there’s serious golf being played in the fall.
In truth, though, there always has been a second Silly Season, and we’re about to enter it. It’s the big pro-ams – the CareerBuilder in the California desert and, in mid-February, Pebble Beach, the granddaddy of the pro-ams.
I say that with some sarcasm. As regular readers might recall, there are few tournaments that I find more difficult to watch than Pebble Beach – odd given that it’s the PGA Tour’s most beautiful setting.
