LOS ANGELES — At the first tee on Friday morning at the Genesis Open, Matt Kuchar, who was playing his rain-delayed first round, hit first in his group. After he put his drive in the fairway, a fan behind the ropes muttered, “Hire a better P.R. team.”
A couple in front of him turned and asked what he meant and the fan explained that Kuchar was “getting killed” for winning close to $1.3 million in a tournament in Mexico last fall but paying his local caddie only $5,000.
As Kuchar walked down the fairway toward his ball, another fan, who was walking toward the tee box, stopped and shouted in his direction, “Frugal.
