On 16th visit to Waialae, Love embraces warm memories of a Tour classic

HONOLULU — As reminisces go, Davis Love III surely would have some fodder, given the notable names next to his name in the standings. Guys such as Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. But Love says there was nothing special about the Sony Open from 30 years ago.

True, it was his rookie year, but the Sony that year was in February, so Love already had played in three events by the time he got to Waialae Country Club. Now it proved to be the first complete 72-hole tournament in his distinguished career, but it’s not as if the 1986 Sony Open stands out in his mind and stirs the embers.
