Notes: Playoff struggles continue for Spieth, Koepka; Presidents Cup watch

NORTON, Mass. — When two of the world’s top three-ranked players (Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth) combine over 36 holes to go 5 over with just three birdies against eight bogeys — on a day, it must be noted, when the field average was 70.487 — you accept it as further proof that golf cannot be explained.

Saturday’s second round of the second playoff tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship, couldn’t have been played in nicer weather.

It also might not have been possible to produce more head-turning opportunities, what with trying to keep up with notables chasing the cut line, the race to get into the top 70 in FedEx Cup standings and move on in the playoffs, and the jockeying for spots on the upcoming American Presidents Cup team.
