The PGA Tour will announce today that Northern Trust, which sponsors the Northern Trust Open in suburban Los Angeles, will not renew its contract and take over for The Barclays, a FedEx Cup playoff event, in 2017.
Since 2008, Northern Trust, a financial-services company with headquarters in Chicago, has sponsored the long-running Tour stop at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. However, Northern Trust officials have opted to increase the company’s PGA Tour involvement with a new five-year sponsorship agreement.
“We are thrilled that Northern Trust will become title sponsor of the lead FedEx Cup playoffs event beginning in 2017,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement.
