Mike Small, 49, eyes Champions Tour, says coaching Illinois still top priority

It was a good fall for the Illinois men's golf team.

Four team victories. An individual title and 12 other top-10 finishes by its players. The No. 2 ranking in the country.

"Guys stepped up and played well," Illinois coach Mike Small said. "Very positive."

Now, as the offseason approaches, Small's players will be trying to get better, working on their games through the winter months and competing in amateur tournaments. Small will take out the clubs, as well.

The 49-year-old will compete in Champions Tour Q-School Dec. 1-4 at TPC Scottsdale (Ariz.). Five cards will be handed out and Small, who turns 50 on March 4, hopes to secure one of them.
