Mickeson in contention after 65 at Monterey Peninsula

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Of course, given the amount of time devoted Thursday to why he had changed drivers and how he called himself “an idiot” for doing so, the subject was examined again Friday. All of which provided plenty of discussion about “spin.”

“Increased spin” and “lower spin” were at the heart of Phil Mickelson’s post-round interview after the left-hander shot 6-under 65 at Monterey Peninsula to roar up the leaderboard at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

But when finally that part of the puzzle was over, how was Mickelson “spinning” his day?

“A good day,” he emphatically declared after pushing to 10-under 133, just one off the lead.
