GULLANE, Scotland – Phil Mickelson met the media Wednesday at Gullane Golf Club, site of this week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, with a smile and a clear understanding that he would be asked about his link to an illegal-gambling operation that was reported last week.
Mickelson declined to comment about the story but instead remarked that stories about athletes these days often are not about them as individuals but “as objects to be discussed,” and it takes the personal element out of it.
“People are going to say things good; they are going to say things bad; they are going to say things true; they are going to say things not true,” said Mickelson, 45, whose 42 PGA Tour victories include five major championships.
