UNIVERSITY PARK, Wash. — They joined forces 23 years ago and virtually have had that “for better or worse” commitment ever since.
But for all their back-and-forth, all their ups-and-downs, all the good times and heartache, there’s a chance that Phil Mickelson and Jim "Bones" Mackay have never conversed with one another for a stretch of time like they did during the nearly five-and-a-half hours it took to navigate Chambers Bay in Thursday’s first round of the 115th U.S. Open.
“There is so much going on out there,” Mackay said. “It is hard, hard work.”
