UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Phil Mickelson will have to wait another year for a chance to complete the career Grand Slam.
Although he played well last week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic the 45-year-old, five-time major champion came to the U.S. Open with tempered expectations. He knew he was playing better, but just wasn’t quite sure when his complete game would click on all cylinders.
It seemed like Mickelson found answers at Chambers Bay during the first round when he shot 69 and was near the top of the leaderboard. The next two days were progressively worse as Lefty struggled to find fairways and greens.
