Troy Merritt finally earned the right to play on the weekend, and he took full advantage with a 10-under 61 in Round 3 of the Quicken Loans National.
Merritt, who has missed five straight cuts and 11 since the start of the year, is even with Kevin Chappell at 14 under, one shot ahead of Rickie Fowler heading into Sunday's final round. He set the 18-hole Quicken Loans National scoring record with his 61.
But this is not completely new for the 29-year-old out of Osage, Iowa. Merritt shot a 61 in the second round of the RBC Heritage in April, where he went on to earn his best finish of the season, third place.
