VIRGINIA WATER, England –– Rory McIlroy could face a stiff fine from the European Tour’s 15-man tournament committee for club throwing during the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship.
McIlroy hit a poor second shot at the par-5 17th hole Thursday at Wentworth's West Course and then hurled his 3-wood 30 yards down the fairway.
It’s the second time this year the Northern Irishman has thrown a club in frustration. McIlroy tossed a 3-iron into a lake on Trump National Doral’s par-5 eighth hole after hitting his approach shot into the lake. He went on to bogey the hole.
