McIlroy stays out of rhythm at Deutsche Bank, likely to lose No. 1 ranking

NORTON, Mass. — His birdie, birdie finish on a quiet Sunday morning stroll around TPC Boston salvaged something for Rory McIlroy. A bit of pride, perhaps, because level par is better than shooting over par, eh?

But what it most likely didn’t save was his world No. 1 ranking. When McIlroy finished 54 holes at 71 — 215, he was 2 over and wedged into a share of 65th at the Deutsche Bank Championship. And that’s a long, long way from being top 10, which is what he needs to maintain his No. 1 ranking.

If he were to finish outside the top 10 and if Jason Day were not to win this DBC, then McIlroy was told that Jordan Spieth would move back to No.
