Josh Geary led after shooting an even-par 72, two strokes ahead of compatriots Daniel Nisbet, Nick Cullen, Alistair Presnall and R.J. Caracella, plus Kuchar, who had three birdies against five bogeys.
Kuchar, who arrived from South Korea where he had played in the winning United States team at the President's Cup, said the gusty conditions at the Natadola Bay resort meant ''it was purely about survival out there.
