Match Play mindset remains same despite change to format

SAN FRANCISCO — As the saying goes, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing. Same goes with analysis. Paralysis by analysis is real. Nothing can spoil the fun quicker than over-analyzing, and for proof we’ve got the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship, which commences Wednesday at TPC Harding Park.

Though enveloped with a new look — one that features 16 four-man groups in round-robin play to get down to 16 — the Match Play is still one of those highly-anticipated weeks because it is so different from the usual stroke-play mentality that rolls around each Thursday. True, we wouldn’t want a steady dose of match play, but when it comes around, it is easy to soak in the specialness of it.
