The first time Louise Suggs traveled to Great Britain, she arrived by ship. The year was 1948, and scenes from a war-torn London caused the young amateur to mature on the spot. U.S. Curtis Cup players brought canned goods in their foot lockers for those in need.
Suggs won the British Ladies’ Amateur that year before turning professional. She went on to help found the LPGA, winning 61 events, including 11 majors, and was an inaugural inductee into the LPGA Hall of Fame.
At age 91, Suggs finds that her pioneering days aren’t over. On Feb. 10, she was named one of 14 women invited to become members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St.
