UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Michael Putnam has more experience at Chambers Bay than perhaps anyone in the field at the U.S. Open, and he offered up one simple suggestion to improve the layout – switch the greens to poa annua grass.
Putnam is a local resident and played the first-ever round at Chambers Bay, shooting a 70. He matched that score in the opening round this week, when he again put the first ball into the air, but missed the cut after a second-round 77.
The greens at Chambers are a mix of poa annua and mostly fescue, and the condition of the surfaces has come under fire from the field through the first two rounds.
