Legendary broadcaster, former Tuscon Open host Joe Garagiola dies at 90

Legendary broadcaster and baseball player Joe Garagiola died Wednesday at age 90, the Arizona Diamondbacks confirmed.

Gargiola was most recently a commentator for the Diamondbacks until his retirement in 2013.

However, the golf world remembers Garagiola for his time as the sponsor of the Tuscon Open. Garagiola became the tournament sponsor in 1977 in what was supposed to be a one-year deal as a celebrity host. But Garagiola was so popular he remained the host until 1984 when Seiko Time Corporation became the sponsor.

Garagiola was well-known for his quick wit and quotable lines. One of which came when he was asked where the best place to stand at a celebrity golf event would be and he responded, "the safest place would be in the fairway.
