OAKMONT, Pa. – Brooks Koepka wasn’t thinking about equaling Johnny Miller’s record 63 at Oakmont Country Club Sunday at the U.S. Open.
He was thinking about smashing it.
“I was hoping for something even lower,” Koepka said. “I was hoping for 60, 61. I thought that was pretty obtainable.”
Nobody has ever shot lower than 63 in a major championship, and wasn’t meant to be for Koepka, whose brilliant run in the middle of the round was bookended by a slow start and a disappointing finish. He signed for a wild 2-under-par 68 with six birdies, six bogeys and an eagle.
