Kaufmann: Cheap TV talk has become too plentiful in golf

At his first Masters with CBS, in 1973, Ben Wright interviewed fellow Englishman Peter Oosterhuis during a rain delay. Wright recently recalled that the interview lasted 27 minutes and was well-received by Augusta National chairman Clifford Roberts.

Wright’s mentor, Henry Longhurst, was less kind in assessing the work.

Over numerous drinks later that day, Wright said, Longhurst reminded him, “ ‘We are nothing but caption writers in a picture business, and if you can’t improve the quality of the pictures, keep your (expletive) mouth shut.
