Karlberg tops downtrending Kaymer for Italian Open title

What’s going on with Martin Kaymer? He’s had the strangest of seasons, and was at his head-scratching best in the Italian Open.

You’d have bet your house on the German winning the Italian Open in some style. However, he lost in a playoff to Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg after yet another collapse this season.

The pair tied on 19-under-par 269 and needed to play the 18th hole twice in a playoff to determine the outcome. The 29-year-old Swede earned his first European Tour victory, and a check for €250,000 (about $283,000) with a 25-foot birdie at the second extra hole.
