He is vying for his third win of the season while also positioning himself to do what no one has done in the nine-year history of the FedEx Cup: Repeat as the Cup champion.
In just giving himself that opportunity — he is guaranteed a position in the final two tournaments — Spieth is a FedEx Cup outlier. He is just the second defending FedEx Cup champion to qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship, joining Brandt Snedeker, the 2012 winner.
