LAKE FOREST, Ill. — For five straight holes Friday afternoon, Jordan Spieth completely lost confidence in his putter, making the task of keeping pace with Jason Day, the world’s top golfer, even more daunting than normal.
Chasing Day throughout the FedEx Cup had taken a toll on Spieth, who lost his No. 1 ranking after failing to make the cut at the previous events in the four-event competition, the Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championships.
Now, a day after Spieth had recorded his first round under par in three weeks in the opening round of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club, his game was seemingly abandoning him once again.
