SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – As the skies darkened Thursday afternoon at Baltusrol Golf Club, Jordan Spieth’s day got a little brighter.
Having double-bogeyed the par-4 seventh hole, and with winds picking up amid a light drizzle on the back nine, Spieth’s day wasn’t going to get any easier. Yet, somehow he managed to birdie two of his final three holes to salvage an even-par 70 to open his PGA Championship.
“I thought I was going to get shut out,” Spieth said. “Michael and I were trying to set a goal after No. 7 to get two birdies to get back to even par teeing off on 18.
