UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Despite occupying the No. 3 position in the Official World Golf Ranking and teeing it up in his 21st U.S. Open this week, Jim Furyk arrived at Chambers Bay under the radar.
In some ways, it’s understandable that Furyk would be out of everyone’s sight line on a golf course that many believe will benefit the long hitter depending on how Mike Davis, executive director of the U.S. Golf Association, and his crew set it up. Names like Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose seem to roll off the tongue when discussing favorites, and as a relatively short hitter, Furyk isn’t in the conversation.
