PURCHASE, N.Y. – Seventy-one golfers started Monday filled with optimism, hope and the dream of qualifying to play in next week’s U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. By 6 p.m., Lee Janzen, Jamie Lovemark, Pat Wilson and Rich Barbarian were the only four players who drove away with a smile.
Century Country Club and Old Oaks Country Club, the Metropolitan PGA Section’s host sites for this year’s sectional qualifyier, are classic courses with thick rough, large trees and slick greens. Rain fell Monday morning before the wind picked up in the afternoon, making conditions challenging for everyone.
