Christy O’Connor Jr., who helped Europe retain the Ryder Cup in 1989, has died. He was 67.
O’Connor died in his sleep while on vacation with his wife, Ann, in Tenerfie, Spain. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
O’Connor, a captain’s pick for the ’89 Ryder Cup team, hit a 2-iron approach to 4 feet to seal a 1-up singles victory over Fred Couples. The matches ended 14-14, two years after Europe’s 15-13 victory at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
O’Connor won four European Tour titles, including the Irish Open in 1975.
