Humble beginnings ground Mo Martin for success and chance at second Women’s British Open title

WOBURN, England – Mo Martin’s first golf bag was made out of one of those cardboard tubes you’d mail a poster in, wrapped in black electrical tape with a rope attached. A 5-year-old Martin carried that homemade bag out to a junior tournament at Industry Hills Golf Club near Los Angeles. The head pro came up to Martin’s father, Allen, while she was warming up on the practice putting green and declared her too young to participate. Allen let it be known that this was Mo’s idea; she had begged him to play.

Just let her hit a drive off the first tee, Allen told the pro, and then you can decide if it’s suitable for her to compete.
