HONOLULU — He loves Hawaii.
Then again, don’t we all?
But it hardly explains why Charles Howell III is a scoring machine here at Waialae Country Club when the Sony Open rolls around.
Surely, there’s got to be a more compelling explanation for the 6-under 64 he posted late Thursday afternoon, the 40th time in 53 rounds he has broken par at Waialae. Could he offer in-depth analysis as to why he’s never missed a cut in 14 starts or why he’s twice finished second, once finished third, twice been fourth, and once been fifth?
In a warm, early-evening breeze, Howell tried apologized, knowing his reason wouldn’t offer that much insight.
