After winning the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur, Min Woo Lee took a look at the names of past winners engraved on the trophy. A particular name, one listed three times, from 1991-93, caught his eye:
Tiger Woods.
“It feels really good to be on the same trophy as Tiger,” said Lee, the 17-year-old Australian who defeated Noah Goodwin, 2 and 1, in Saturday’s final at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.
Three months earlier, Lee got a chance to meet his idol. Woods was a surprise guest at the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, where he hosted a clinic, hung out with the competitors, and was on the first tee the next morning for a photo and a few more words of encouragement.
