Household names seek U.S. Open spot via sectional qualifying

With U.S. Open qualifying scheduled for June 8 at 10 sites throughout the country, some veteran names will be among those trying to earn trips to Chambers Bay.

Stewart Cink’s five-year exemption for having won the 2009 Open Championship is up, so he will be forced to qualify for the first time in years. A streak of 19 consecutive U.S. Open appearances is on the line for Cink, who has fallen to 227th in the world ranking.

Steve Stricker hasn’t missed a U.S. Open since 2005, but he’s not yet exempt, so he, too, will be in the qualifying mix.
