Seventeen players broke par on Thursday at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, and the whole group is within two of the lead.
Five players are logjammed at 3-under in a share of the lead in Vero Beach, Fla., with six more just one back. Among the early co-leaders is Scott Harvey, the Mid-Am defending champion.
The 37-year-old Harvey, who also played in this year's Masters, Walker Cup and U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, birdied his first two holes on the John's Island Club West Course but needed a late eagle at the 17th to post 3-under 69.
Along with Harvey, Marc Dull, Keith Unikel and Bryan Smith also emerged with 3-under scores (Unikel and Smith doing so on the par-71 North Course).
