College golf has undergone some mammoth changes over the past 10-15 years. The role of a college-golf coach is not what it was a couple of decades ago – not even close. It’s safe to say that as few as a dozen or so coaches were fully invested in what they did back then. Today, that’s not the case.

As the stakes rise in college golf, coaching has become a big deal. That has led to a lot of debate about which coaches are the best in the game. Geography can play a big role in a team’s success, and the debate often lands there: Would Illinois coach Mike Small be the same type of coach and enjoy the same successes if he were coaching at UCLA?
