April 21 (Reuters) - South Korea's Ryu So-yeon fired a tournament-record nine-under-par 63 in the opening group to start and end the day at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic on Thursday.
Despite being stirred by a wake-up call at around 4 a.m. in San Francisco, Ryu was bright and alert by the time she hit the course and signed for a bogey-free round that gave her a two-shot edge over Taiwan's Candie Kung and Japan's Haru Nomura.
"I hate to wake up early but fortunately (we) had good weather," Ryu told reporters at the Lake Merced Golf Club.
