Gene Sauers wins US Senior Open Championship (The Associated Press)

UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio (AP) -- Gene Sauers outlasted Miguel Angel Jimenez down the stretch Monday to win the U.S. Senior Open Championship.

The 53-year-old Georgian won his first senior tournament after heavy rain delayed the final round for a day. He had three birdies and two bogeys for a 1-under 69 to beat Jimenez and Billy Mayfair by a stroke. He finished with a 3-under 277.

Sauers, who began playing again in 2012 after being sidelined for seven years by an illness, trailed Jimenez by a stroke to start the day, overtook him on the second hole and led by a stroke until the 15th.
