Fowler (71) starts strong, cools off at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a solid start on a cold and windy morning at the Wells Fargo Championship, Rickie Fowler was in a familiar position.

The 2012 champion at Quail Hollow Club was 3 under and one shot off the lead through seven holes when his tee shot at the par-3 17th hole (he started on No. 10) dropped woefully short and into a water hazard.

“I made a bad swing. I hit it a bit heavy and the hole was playing pretty short for the distance,” said Fowler, who made double bogey on the hole.
